“Unfurling” Opening Reception

October 9, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

ROCHA ART PRESENTS
“UNFURLING”
A 3-D PRINTED SCULPTURE EXHIBITION
Brought by Architecture Van Brandenburg
in collaboration with Ian Ross

Technology, Art and Design Converge in a First of its Kind Show

This October, Rocha Art will host Unfurling, a first-of its-kind 3-D printed sculpture collaboration with New Zealand based firm Architecture Van Brandenburg, and San Francisco artist Ian Ross. Architecture Van Brandenburg has designed and printed a group of large scale work, specifically for Ross to paint amongst showing the sculptural architectural works. These one of a kind collaborative sculptures will comprise half of the show at Rocha Art, and the other is an exhibition of similar works directly from the Venice Biennale. Viewers will get to experience an entirely new medium for the Rocha Art exhibition space, as well as a rare type of collaboration between cutting edge technology and Street Art inspired painting.

Ross will take viewers on an extrasensory journey by lending his own hyper-organic painting style to the expertly crafted 3-D sculptures, created by Architecture Van Brandenburg with the intention of showcasing the unique design and construction process of their latest project, a colossal 12,0000 square meter building in Shenzhen, China. The dramatic curves and futuristic forms instantly attracted Ross to Van Brandenburg’s aesthetic, as if “somebody had turned my paintings into an architectural dreamscape, but its real!”

“Elements of nature and natural design were their [ Van Brandenburg’s ] inspiration for this building, a sentiment with which I heavily relate to,” says Ross. “3-D sculptures are changing the way people approach design, and I for this show wanted to take that technology, where each atom is literally in it’s right and proper place, and create and juxtapose that perfection.”

Attendees will get an up-close view of the exhibit as well as the painted sculptures. Although it has been over a decade since Ross completed his BFA in Ceramics, he has recently been working again with 3 Dimensional mediums. He sees the potential for 3D printing to lead him into the next phase of his career. Ian’s artwork will incite viewers to take a closer look into the way nature can wield its influence in even the most unexpected of places.

About Van Brandenburg: New Zealand based Architecture Van Brandenburg was commissioned by major fashion label Marisfrolg to create their headquarters in Shenzhen, China, a project 8 years in the making. The complex is 120,000 square meters of construction, comprising of a series of low lying interlinking buildings located within a 12 acre site, ensuring fashion is the central focus of the complex. From an aerial vantage point, the building resembles a bird in flight, while from the ground other natural references can be drawn from materials of stone, recycled bricks and tiles. When complete, the headquarters will include an art exhibition center, boutique hotel and a fashion show venue, and will showcase a culture of fashion, consistent with the Marisfrolg brand. It will demonstrate the importance of design, from fashion to architecture.

About Ian Ross: A central figure in San Francisco’s street art and gallery scenes, Ian Ross is a prolific, interdisciplinary artist known for his statement-making murals, paintings and sculptural work. Born into a multi-generational family of artists in Marin County, many of his greatest foundational aesthetic influences stem from his formative years in Northern California’s diverse landscape. While Ross earned a BFA in Ceramics, he was profoundly influenced by graffiti during high school and college, and has been painting exclusively since completing his undergraduate degree in 2003. Whether in the street or in the studio, his work takes on a visceral, organic quality that mimics the repeating patterns of waves, sprawling growths of wild flora and urban landscapes.
